Winter 2016

January 31, 2016 @ 9:20 PM

I started 2016 off with a terrible virus that kept me from doing much work in the studio, till now, the last day of January.

It's been frustrating, to say the least, but all the time spent resting and healing turned out to be a time of incubation, too!

Lot's of new ideas and projects, including becoming a member of Made In Warren, an artist cooperative in Warren, RI. ( I look forward to being among fellow creatives and artists as we forge a new store based on cooperation, collaboration, and creativity!

The first show of the year is coming up as well, Festival of the Arts at Newport Winterfest.          ( ) It is...

Summer days, summer colors!

August 13, 2015 @ 12:20 PM

Ahh summer! It is very hot here in New England, and there have been a few crazy summer thunderstorms, too. But mostly, when we aren't working, we are either by the pool or by the ocean.

Those colors of the water, and the constant desire to immerse have been the inspiration for the current collection of jewels. I've sought out aqua blue chalcedony, apatite, iolite, and labradorite, as those are the gemstones that evoke the color of the water and sky on these hot days, and seem to cool me off just looking at them.

Don't you feel cooler already?

Summer Days

July 7, 2015 @ 3:53 PM

Summer is here! We here at Violet Drury Designs have had a 4 day weekend, full of fun and family.

We kayaked on the lake, swam in the pool, sat by the backyard firepit, played outdoor games, went to the beach , to the farmstand, and, as one does in Rhode Island, we topped it all off with some clamcakes and chowder!

In the hot weather, with all that activity, we were once again reminded that Violet Drury Designs jewelry is the best! It looks great, is light weight, and uses lever-back earwires that keep earrings from falling out.

This 4th, we mainly wore iolite and coral jewels, earrings and bracelets, which we layered up for a colorful and sparkly addition to our outfits!

Web Page Workings!

June 9, 2015 @ 12:45 AM

Well, here at Violet Drury Designs we are very creative thinkers, and very DIY, but not really too tech savvy, so the web page is a bit of a crawl and a challenge! But, as usual, we are up for a creative challenge! Afterall, "it doesn't matter how slow you go, as long as you go."

So, slowly we go and slowly we add. Learning as we go. Doing it ourselves.

We hope you like it! Feed back is welcome!

Pearls have been the focus of my work in recent weeks, and interestingly enough, I have also been receiving a lot of requests for pearls. Just recently sent a shipment to the Green Phoenix 2 in Annapolis, Maryland. If you are in the area, go check in !

Well, because of this focus and interest, I thought I'd talk about the pearls I use in my work.

True pearls, whether cultivated or found in the wild, are the only gemstone that are produced by a living creature in nature. I use cultivated, or cultured pearls, mainly freshwater. Cultured pearls are "real" pearls. The main difference in them is that they are raised in farms, and have human intervention in creating them.

Freshwater pearls are usually formed in mussels in ...

Is Spring Coming?

March 4, 2015 @ 3:19 PM

It's hard to beleive Spring is just around the corner! But it is. According to the calendar, anyway!
We can't wait to get outside, and to not be wearing multiple layers here on the inside, except maybe layers of pearls!

Here at the studio, we are working on thoughts of Spring, starting with pearls for all those Spring weddings.

Pearls are so beautiful. The luster and warmth of them. The simple elegance. I love how they can evoke an image of conservatism, or propriety, but then you can layer them up and wear them with something risque, and they become classically naughty.

Think Jackie O:

And Marilyn Monroe:

Funny how I chose two women on opposite sides of a love affair with the same man to ...

Rolling into the New Year

February 3, 2015 @ 1:10 PM

Rolling into the new year, amidst piles and piles of snow! It came on suddenly, long after Christmas, when my California heart started thinking about daffodills and the greens of Spring. That might come in Santa Cruz in February, but it not here in the frozen Northeast.

Again, though, the colors of nature are what strike me, after the initial shock of the frigid temperatures. The presnow skies have had the softest pastel grays and oranges, and the most striking cornflower blue. There are mounds of white all around, and the stormy skies come in hues of gray, from a whisper to gun-metal. I'm struck by combinations of color I wouldn't have thought to put together.

I've been seeking out the subtle grays of labradoritre, the ...

October 29, 2014 @ 3:28 PM

It is full blown Autumn now. The colors all around me are breath taking! And so changeable! Every day a change.

The reds, yellows, greens and golds are truly inspiring me, and reminding me of the roots of my creativity, which sprouted right here in New England.

I've been having to be very creative with my supplies. Still sussing out vendors out here, and so have run dangerously low on semi- precious stones and pearls. I am looking forward to the International Gem and Jewelry Show so I can restock my bead supply, and add to it with new design idea implements. I can't wait!

I also started a Facebook page, so like me on Facebook if you are a member.

This is a time of endings, but also a time of renewal and ...
